Basic Skills Skating Tips

1. First and foremost issue with our skaters is safety; please remember that a helmet is always a safe bet

2. This one is for the parents, please do not go onto the ice this is a hazard not only for you,
but for the children as well. Parents NOT going onto the ice will create a better learning environment for the children, as the parents will not serve as a distraction for the children and the children in turn will be able to better listen to the instructors.

3. Our Basic Skills classes serve as a first time experience to the wonderful world of skating and these classes teach the kids the basic skills needed to move on to higher levels of skating.

4. -First we want the child and the parents to know how to properly pick out a skate size. Usually it is the same size as street shoe size and maybe even one size smaller but usually is no bigger than street shoe. When you get your skate make sure to unlace the skate all the way to the bottom then pull the tongue out as far as possible then put the foot into the skate and it should fit fine. Another thing to remember about the fitting of a skate is that the child should wear a thin sock, this helps the skate to fit as snug as possible which makes it a bit easier to learn how to skate.

5. Some of the elements we will be teaching the kids to do:
A couple of off-ice elements to help the child get the feel of being in ice skate
Marching around in skates off the ice
Sitting down and standing up in skates off the ice
Doing a “dip” in skates off the ice
“ON ICE” Elements
Marching in place on ice
Marching across the ice
Sitting down and standing up on ice
Doing a “dip” on ice
Hopping in place on the ice
These are just some of the basic elements that will be worked on during class time. We ask the parents to try and provide as much support for their children as possible. Because as they say practice makes perfect”.
